Dog Do's and Don'ts
Waihi Beach welcomes all furry friends! See below for some general information about walking and visiting with dogs.
Where can I walk my dog in summer?
On the Beach:
Dogs are allowed in some areas and not in others for the safety of people and our natural wildlife (we have nesting areas in the dunes). At all times they must be kept under proper control and doggy-doo must be bagged and removed.
- From the 16th of December until 7th of February you may walk your dog on the beach before 9am. From 9am-7pm you may not.
- You may walk your dog year round on the stretch of beach from Albacore Ave to Plom Road, Bowentown. This area is an off-leash area – so long as you can control your dog. As you approach, keep your dog on their lead until you are on the beach.
- The Island View Reserve is restricted to dogs on a leash area between October and March as birds are nesting within the reserve during this period.
- Anzac Bay in Bowentown has no restrictions, but dogs must be kept under control.
The Village and Playgrounds:
- Dogs must be on leash at all times in the Village and are prohibited from playgrounds and play areas.
Tracks and Trails:
- Dogs are prohibited in the Orakawa Reserve. This is DOC land.
- You may walk your dog up The Trig and around the Reservoir Loop Track
Where can I stay with my dog?
- Dogs are welcome at campsites at Beachaven Top 10 Holiday Park year round on selected sites. They are allowed at Bowentown Holiday Park from 1 Mar – 30 Nov also in selected sites. *Please check specifically with the park managers upon booking.
- A range of Air BnB’s allow dogs. Check their websites and directly with the owners.
Can I bring my dog to any eateries?

- The Surf Shack;
- Beach House Café;
- The Porch:
- Secret Garden;
- Rabbit Moon.
